After enjoying their first winning season since 2007, the Arizona Sun Devils are excited to hear if a few of their top performers from a season ago have their name called during the 2013 NFL Draft. It is not a banner year for pro prospects out of Tempe, but it seems likely that at least a couple Sun Devils will get to live their dream rather than being left playing fantasy football.

LB Brandon Magee

According to most mock drafts, Magee is the only Arizona State player who is a lock to get drafted at some point. The outside linebacker would probably be projected even higher than he is now if health concerns were not surrounding him. Ever since missing all of 2011 with a torn Achilles’ tendon, he has had to prove to scouts he is fully healthy.  Magee’s athleticism has always been a huge part of his game. Scouts see him as a slightly undersized linebacker who could really do well at the weak side position. The 4^th or 5^th round seems the most likely right now, as he is rated anywhere between the 15^th and 20^th best player at his position.  He will be no stranger to the draft process this weekend, as he has been drafted three times in the MLB draft. He played for Arizona State’s baseball team, but due to limited success at the collegiate level, he appears to be all in as a true NFL prospect.

FS Keelan Johnson

The redshirt senior had a solid final season in Tempe, and now he is trying to parlay that into an opportunity to shine on Sundays. Currently on the fringe of the 7^th round and being a possible free agent pickup, Johnson will be one of many prospects around the country sweating things out during the entire process.  In 2012, his 88 tackles were second on Arizona State. He led the team with five interceptions, as he showed off his athleticism with 13 pass deflections as well. His size and speed is only average, which makes him sort of fall in the middle of the pack in the eyes of scouts. Someone will give him an opportunity though, and chances are he gets his named called. 

After those two players, things get dicey. The most likely to be drafted will be punter Josh Hubner. He is one of the top punters in the draft, but unfortunately only a few go each season. Deveron Carr, Rashad Ross, Jamal Miles, Cameron Marshall and Brice Schwab all had solid college careers, but they will more than likely be hoping for simply a tryout to get a chance.

Now word leaks out that prized ASU verbal commit and Elite11 quarterback, Josh Dobbs out of Georgia, is looking at two SEC schools: Mississippi State and Tennessee.

There is absolutely no doubt this is the hardest working staff in terms of recruiting that we have seen in Tempe. The coaches have recruited across the nation and identified a ton of talent. Certainly, ASU is involved in more 4 star recruits than recent years combined. However, what others outside Sun Devil Nation see is a program with a recruiting class half full of Junior College players and high schoolers from Arizona and California. The coaching staff has not been able to close and keep kids outside of the Southwest. This is most evident in Todd Grahams home state of Texas. Of course, this is puzzling because ASU is making an even bigger effort in recruiting Texas as evident by its hiring of Chris Thomsen as the new RB coach.

Prospects like Dimarya Mixon, Jason Reese, Tre Flowers, and Christian Daimler, all from Texas, committed to the Sun Devils and quickly flipped to other schools closer to Texas. Currently, ASU has only two Texas recruits, CB William Earley and WR Ellis Jefferson (who look like extremely solid and exciting players) to show for all of the hours spent in the state.

So, Arizona top prospects are leaving the state while verbal commits from far away from Tempe are switching to colleges closer to their homes. It only makes sense that a guy like Josh Dobbs would make one final review of all of his choices, especially those closer to his home. Instead of lashing out about an educated teenager making a full assessment of his options, it should be time for ASU fans to assess their own team and coaching staff. It is necessary to take a step back and look at the program from afar without our Maroon and Gold glasses.

While the ASU coaching staff has had 1 year to recruit the 2013 class, recruiting across the nation is beginning earlier and earlier in high school football players career.  In fact, two weeks before the 2013 National Signing Day, the ASU coaching staff is having its first “Junior Day” on campus for the class of 2014 where local high school stars like Kyle Allen, Natrell Curtis, Casey Tucker, and Dionte Sykes (to name a few), get introduced to the school, the program, and the coaching staff.  The coaching staff and its recruiting efforts should be viewed fully on the 2014 class as most football players develop relationships with college coaching staffs beginning their junior year.

In Dennis Erickson’s last two recruiting classes, 2010 and 2011, he signed 46 total players.  Removing the 9 JC players from 2010/2011 who have played and used their eligibility (Bell, De Armas, Elder, Schwab, Simmons, Willie, Ayers, Ross, Hubner), that leaves 35 total players who should be left on the current ASU roster to lead the future teams.

What do these names have in common?

2010:  Ramon Abreu, Lee Adams, Kevin Anderson, Josh Fulton, Randy Knust, Jordan McDonald, DJ Spann, Joita Te’i, Calvin Tonga, Taylor Walstad, Damien Williams
2011:  Stanley Absanon, Joe Eason, Karl Holmes, David Moala, Brent Walker

And the answer is simple:  None of these players are currently with the ASU program.

First thing first, this is another reason why Dennis Erickson found his way out of Tempe.  Erickson and his staff were not recruiting for long term program success.

Additionally, this explains why Todd Graham and his coaching staff have focused on getting impact Junior College players in the 2012 and 2013 classes.  Last season, Marion Grice and Chris Young became instant impact players while Alonzo Agwuenu, Steffon Martin, Darwin Rogers, and Jake Sheffield provided nice depth.

Sun Devil nation is looking for big things next season from Marcus Hardison, Jaelen Strong, Joe Morris, and De’Marieya Nelson while guys like Antonio Longino, Demetrius Cherry, Eriquel Florence, and Nick Kelly add nice depth for 2013 and could crack the starting lineup in 2014.  These Todd Graham Sun Devils are filling in for all of the Dennis Erickson misses in 2010 and 2011.

In other news I have a off-beat opinion of this game and what has gone on lately.  I love seeing coaches that think outside the box, and you have gotten a really good show of this over the past few weeks  with Chip Kelly and Noel Mazzone’s unique brand of offense or USC’s pro preview of defense and offensive talent.  You don’t see teams with these unique qualities up and down the schedule and it continues this Saturday with an offense that took a long time to catch on across the other conferences.  Mike Leach’s Air Raid offense was long thought of as a gimmicky system but look no further than his disciples (and historically those touched by long time offensive guru Hal Mumme) that now coach big time programs like Texas A&M, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Houston, and Louisiana Tech.  That’s a pretty impressive spread of former assistants and quarterbacks that now deploy the Air Raid in some way or another.  I look at these games as a way of rating our new coaching staff and the schemes they run and this week is just the next test.  Good luck to all the seniors who I hope can grasp the accomplishment that is about to take place, and I look forward to talking more about this game with Don in our next episode.
